More Zwinglian that Zwingli

I have been enjoying Gavin Ourtland’s Youtube channel lately. And I have been particularly edified by his work on icons and the Eastern Orthodox church. Granted he is far kinder and ecumenical than I would be, but that good will disagreement has not been expressed in return. I was particularly fascinated by the reaction toContinue reading “More Zwinglian that Zwingli”

But Don’t Have Too Much Joy…

I’ll begin by reiterating my dislike of the Crosspolitic crowd. I love their motto, which will play into this musing in a bit, but I deem their execution to be poor. So the kids from Moscow have distilled their cultural engagement down to: Fight, Laugh, Feast. And they do those things, I do think theyContinue reading “But Don’t Have Too Much Joy…”

Weasel Words and Wilson Wannabe’s

It is no secret in my circle of friends that I have a low opinion of Toby Sumpter. So imagine my surprise when, a few months back, CrossPolitic said Baptist theology causes transgenderism and I learned after an assumption that not only did Sumpter not say that but he wasn’t even on the show atContinue reading “Weasel Words and Wilson Wannabe’s”

Wilson’s Gay Sermon

I like Doug Wilson, a lot. I am profoundly grateful for his sermons on fathers in the home and in the church. His lecture on Calvinism and Lewis is what pushed me over the edge into Reformed theology. I can not listen to The Romance of Protestantism without weeping. When he is on he isContinue reading “Wilson’s Gay Sermon”

Calvinism by the Rules of Comedy

It begins in paradise, descends into chaos, and ascends in paradise. Or to use the literature maxim, “In a tragedy you die, in a comedy you get hitched.” Comedic principals and instinctsContinue reading “Calvinism by the Rules of Comedy”

Would You have a Drink with It?

“One of the tests that should regularly be applied to the results of any thinking process, however plausible, is: Would I like to sit down and have a vermouth with this thing I have just talked myself into? On that scale, ballerinas, oysters, free speech, and romantic love come off just fine. Computers, the ModernContinue reading “Would You have a Drink with It?”

The Good Things were Predestined Too

The other evening my friend Hudson joined me on the front porch. We had a couple of cigars (each), Lagavulin 16, we tried a particularly awful coffee bourbon that will remain nameless, and listened to a lecture by N.D. Wilson on Chestertonain Calvinism. We conversed and laughed. It is one of the nights that I will remember for a long time. It was more than a good night, it was particularly holy. In Ecclesiastes Solomon teaches that life can be incredibly hard. But God has generously granted a salve, good friends, good food, and good drink.
